4 / Adult Manga Anime Movies to Watch – Top 10 – 11:11 – Patlabor (2002)
Mamoru Oshii’s first two “Patlabor” films were excellent, both incredible and atmospheric pieces of work that always focused on characters first. For the third movie, you will find almost none of the original production staff involved but for Kenji Kawai, longtime Oshii composer. This said, I entered into the experience skeptical and was pleasantly rewarded.
WXIII, which stands for “Wrecked 13” for an almost indecipherable reason, is a fitting continuation of the series that gets occasionally bogged down in a ridiculous “big monster” plot. Much like the second film (arguably Oshii’s best), fans should note that the main characters of the regular Patlabor series appear only incidentally. Asuma and Noa are the first members of Unit 2 to make an appearance, in a non-speaking part, almost 30 minutes in! Goto and Unit 2 don’t have an actual speaking role until the last 20 minutes or so of the film. The movie focuses entirely on Detective Matsui, now older and on the injured list, and his young partner. Viewers of the first two films will recognize them, and it’s a welcome exploration of their lives. In essence, it’s a detective story, although the outcome is never really in doubt.
What makes the film so enjoyable is the excellent characterization of the detectives. The monster plot-line is fun at points and ridiculous most of the rest of the time, but thankfully it’s spread out pretty thin. There are some beautifully composed shots, the music is spot-on, and the script is clever and in keeping with the tone of the first two films. There are some annoying plot holes that a Kazunori Ito script would have avoided, but it is overall a good effort from the new screenwriter.
3 / Adult Manga Anime Movies to Watch – Top 10 – 13:38 – Ninja Scroll
Madhouse Studios anime following the adventures of a ninja who travels the land hiring out his services for gold or a worthy cause. Jubei Kibagami (voice of Kôichi Yamadera) finds one such cause when he stumbles across Kagero (Emi Shinohara), a female ninja who is the lone survivor of a highly skilled group who were sent to investigate suspicious activity involving Tessai (Ryûzaburô Otomo), a formidable warrior with the ability to turn his skin to stone. Jubei agrees to help Kagero but may have cause to doubt his decision as he finds himself facing an increasingly tough array of enemies. When he discovers that Tessai is affiliated to the Eight Devils of Kimon, a group of ninjas led by his oldest foe Himuro Genma (Daisuke Gôri), it is clear that Jubei will require every ounce of his cunning and swordsmanship to survive the quest.
A peak achievement of Japanese animation (anime), this propulsive mix of samurai action adventure and supernatural fantasy from writer-director Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Supernatural Best City) is defiantly animation for grown-ups, complete with fountains of blood, plenty of naked flesh, and (in both the subtitled and dubbed versions) some decidedly strong language. (Students of Japanese language could pick up some useful expressions.

1 / Adult Manga Anime to Watch – Top 10 – 17:23 – Ghost In The Shell
Ghost in the Shell is a 1995 anime cyberpunk film based on the manga of the same name by Masamune Shirow. It was written by Kazunori Itō and directed by Mamoru Oshii, and stars the voices of Atsuko Tanaka, Akio Ōtsuka, and Iemasa Kayumi. Ghost in the Shell was a Japanese-British international co-production, produced by Kodansha, Bandai Visual and Manga Entertainment, with animation provided by Production I.G.
The plot follows Motoko Kusanagi, a public-security agent, who hunts the mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master. The philosophical themes include self-identity in a technologically advanced world. The music, composed by Kenji Kawai, includes an ancient Japanese language.
Widely considered one of the greatest anime films of all time, critics particularly praised the film’s visuals, achieved through a combination of traditional cel animation and CGI animation. The film, which had a budget over $10 million, was initially a box office failure, before drawing a cult following on home video, and eventually grossing approximately $43 million in total box office and home video sales revenue. It inspired filmmakers such as the Wachowskis, creators of the Matrix films, and James Cameron. In 2004, Oshii directed Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, billed as a separate work and not a true sequel. In 2008, Oshii released an updated version of the original film, Ghost in the Shell 2.0, featuring new audio and updated 3D animation. A live-action adaptation (See: Ghost in the Shell) starring Scarlett Johansson was released in 2017.(source wiki)
