Be Inspired By Superheroes For A Super Healthy You

In a recent survey, 43% of respondents set healthier eating as their challenge for this year, in addition to working out more frequently. If you’re currently feeling heftier than Mjolnir, perhaps this one’s for you. Health professionals agree that adopting a healthy, balanced diet with regular exercise is one of the best ways to get in shape, so get your superhero soundtrack ready and prepare to lift like Thor.

From Bruce Banner to Bruce Lee

Of course, Thor doesn’t actually lift. It’s one of the perks of being an Asgardian god.  You, however, will need to commit to regular workouts if you want to see change literally taking shape. Current government guidelines recommend 150-300 minutes of moderately intense aerobic activity per week for adults; activities which raise the heart rate such as cycling, swimming or martial arts. Health officials also advise muscle strengthening activity twice a week; not only will this give you more definition and tone but it will also improve your posture and help you burn calories more efficiently.

Become an Iron Man

Shifting incredible bulk doesn’t just happen in the gym.  Studies have shown the importance of eating enough iron-rich foods such as lean meat, lentils, dark green leafy vegetables and eggs for improved athletic performance.  Your body also needs protein for muscle repair and carbohydrates for energy. Why not blend your own nutrient-packed fuel for a healthy boost whenever you need it?  Adding oatmeal to your smoothie gives you slow release energy through the morning, or try peanut butter for a tasty protein punch.

What would the Captain do?

At a time when trendy diets and workouts are everywhere, it’s worth remembering that each body is unique, and yours may not necessarily respond to the latest fad.  As someone who was frozen in ice since the mid 1940s, Captain America probably isn’t one for new fangled trends either. Keep it simple, like he would.  Find an exercise that increases your heart rate and makes you feel great, and regularly set yourself new goals and challenges. Even if this means starting small, by taking the stairs or parking a little further from the office.  As for food, you may not have Super Soldier Serum, but a balanced healthy diet will always be in fashion.

Superheroes are often synonymous with steely determination, and with a little of your own you can soon make a real difference to your health.  Find ways to workout regularly, and support this with healthy, nutritious food that fuels your fitness. The first steps are always the hardest, but they’ll soon lead to mighty strides.
