Estelle California is a singer/songwriter born in France. She started playing the piano when she was 5 years old and went on to study saxophone. Later, she became an avid dancer and was formally trained in opera.

In 2013, Estelle moved to Oakland, CA, where she felt drawn to the diverse and respectful community. Her love for the state of California and its people led her to change her artist name.

“California is the home, the family and the love that I have ever dreamed of having. This music was born thanks to this land of Freedom and Beauty, as well as my happiness. I will forever be grateful I met You California.”

Inspired by the musicianship of Nina Simone and invigorated by her new home, Estelle’s new songs affirm an unfettered spirit against all forms of abuse and oppression led by a spiritual calling . With one hand, Estelle reaches downwards and back to her own beginning, to the soil of France, to the bruised and branded past; with her other hand, she reaches up to grab the moon, the stars, and all the promises of California. She smashes these hands together, she closes them into fists, and she beats out a wild melody.

With the release of her single “Star,” Estelle California is stepping out onto the music scene with a promising debut. Estelle is a passionate artist who sings meaningful lyrics, spreading light and hope through her music.

“Star” is a soul/jazz track, a song of freedom that declares Estelle’s identity and all her life commitment. Estelle has been working on “Star” and singing it for three years to be ready to stand strong in her voice and share her powerful message. Drawing from Estelle’s difficult past, the song is a declaration of identity for anyone who feels lost. Estelle’s smooth vocals are also a perfect match for the Marvin Gaye-reminiscent instrumentals.

Estelle says, “The lyrics of ‘Star’ call to that identity, self-worth, and truth taken away from you as a victim, and how the resilience and the journey to overcome, are this special light we shine.”

An essential part of Estelle’s identity as an artist is her passion for social justice. Estelle grew up in France in an environment where there was a lot of racism and multiple kinds of prejudices, ideas that Estelle rejected and felt stifled by. As a result of her experience, she especially works to spread awareness through music and to show love for those who have been oppressed.

“Star” was recorded at Tarpan Studios in the Bay Area. The track is produced by Narada Michael Walden, who has worked with renowned artists such as Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, and Whitney Houston. The song includes percussion by James Henry, bass by Troy Lampkins, electric guitar by Vernon “Ice” Black, keys by Justus Dobrin, and backing vocals by Larry Baptiste, Tony Lindsey, and Cornell Carter.

You can find “Star” on Spotify or on any other major platform. You can also take a look at her EPK on YouTube.
