There is a fight among fans and filmmakers over the role of special effects in movies. The debate is over which looks better or which one makes a more authentic movie or gives the audience a clearer feel for the movie that they are watching. Along with this goes the conceit that the audience can always tell the difference between a digital effect and a practical effect or one that is done on set in camera. But there are some times that the much maligned Computer Generated Imagery has slipped by the audience unnoticed. Even in the notoriously CGI heavy Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whether it’s putting a helmet on Captain America or hair on Captain Marvel, CGI can have some subtle applications. It has been used to bring together Avengers who are not all in the same place or to create costumes like Black Panther’s vibranium suit or the Quantum Suits or to correct the practical suits on set like the not always smooth Spider-man suit or a Loki outfit that revealed more than intended. Sometimes characters like the Wasp need CGI to realize their superhero potential or an injured Robert Downey Jr has to be replaced by a digital Tony Stark and Iron Man. Sometimes CGI combines with make up and lighting to take years off the age of characters, bringing Kurt Russell back to his Used Cars glory days, Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury to the 90s, or RDJ to his Less Than Zero baby face. Let’s look at some of the CGI that you might have missed.
