Why Game Of Thrones Didn’t End With 3 Movies As Originally Planned

The final season for Game Of Thrones acually could have averted disaster?!

A Song Of Ice And Fire writer George R. R. Martin originally had big plans for the final season of arguably the most popular television series of all time. As a big fan of Tolkien and his work, the inventor of Westeros had intended to bring the series to a close in an epic The Lord Of The Rings style movie trilogy.

Show creators David Benioff and DB Weiss had intended to go forward with this, hoping for 6 hours worth of film funding. In the end this was ultimately rejected by HBO, resulting in the heavily criticized eighth season that disappointed fans worldwide.

In a recent interview with ‘Welt’, George R. R. Martin opened up on the reasons why HBO rejected his vision for Game Of Thrones.

“Those responsible said: ‘we produce TV series, we are not in the cinema business,” the author said. “And when HBO does make movies, like now with the film that is based on the ‘Deadwood’ series, they only produce it to show it on TV—not in the cinema. Everything is changing right now. What is cinema today? What is television? What is streaming? Is Netflix making cinema or television now? Everything mixes up.”

Whether or not a Hollywood style movie trilogy would have been the better option for an ending, we shall never know. However Martin has confirmed that the books and the series are two quite separate things. Could this hint that dissatisfied fans may actually get the proper ending they hoped for?
