Amazon Kindle Kids Edition review: A nice idea but we can’t recommend this e-reader

Another huge bonus is Amazon’s ridiculously good two-year worry-free guarantee – so if the Kindle gets dropped in the bath or smashed in a school rucksack you simply send it back for a free replacement.

There’s clearly plenty to love about the Kindle Kids Edition, so why aren’t we recommending you buy one?

When Express.co.uk took delivery of our review unit we placed it straight in the hands of our 11-year-old book fan. Handing the gleaming gadget over to this avid reader brought a look of wild excitement to her eyes especially as we promised so much to read without having to ask for any pocket money or a trip to town for a visit to the bookshop.

However, despite the initial thrill of what the Kindle for Kids had to offer it soon became apparent that the reality wasn’t so exciting.

Our reviewer soon got bored of searching endless menus for books and after a few hours had her head firmly stuck inside the real pages of her favourite paperback. Maybe we are in the minority, but the excitement of a list of reads on an e-ink screen just can’t replace the joy of exploring the shelves of a bookshop or library.
