When Superman and Lois Lane Fought Against Idi Amin

This is “My Name It Ain’t Nothin’,” a look at when comic books guest star celebrities, but their names are changed so as to avoid any legal problems.

Today, based on a suggestion from reader Matthew O., we see the time that Superman and Lois Lane fought against…Idi Amin?!

Idi Amin was a military officer who became the Commander of the Ugandan Army. After a coup, he was named the President of Uganda. He served in that role from 1971-1979, where he was one of the most brutal despots of the 20th Century.

In 1977’s Superman Family #186 (by Gerry Conway, Win Mortimer and Joe Giella), with a striking Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez cover…

a WGBS reporter investigates the regime of “Ada Baba,” when she is taken prisoner…

Lois Lane wants to investigate, but Morgan Edge suggests bringing Superman along, as Superman was interested in Ada Baba anyways (it’s 1977, Superman, this JUST caught your interest?).

Superman goes to sort Ada Baba out when he is shocked to learn that Ada Baba has some Kryptonite and he has used it to get a British scientist to build him a machine that could control Superman…

Superman begins arresting massive amounts of dissidents and when Lois questions him, he smacks her…

Lois and the other reporter (who luckily is still alive) decide to save the day themselves. This, of course, involves Lois Lane putting on blackface. In the 1970s, Lois Lane would put on blackface for a story in an instant. It’d be like, “Hey, Lois, would you like to cover the annual Metropolis Spelling Bee?” “Way ahead of you, Chief, I’ve already got my blackface on.” “Don’t call me Chief! And also, yeah, don’t use blackface so much, either.”

They try to go undercover as part of Baba’s harem. There’s the “classic” joke that Matthew mentioned in his e-mail about how OJ Simpson would be able to tell Lois wasn’t really black…

Anyhow, they trick Ada Baba until they break his machine and Superman is free and the day is saved.

Wow, you have to give Conway a lot of credit for taking on such heady topics and then…perhaps some credit is taken away for the whole “Lois and Superman solving the whole Ugandan crisis in an afternoon” deal and the blackface stuff.

Thanks to Matthew for the suggestion!
