This week’s theme is…Grant Morrison’s run on Animal Man, which was largely illustrated by Chas Truong with inks by Doug Hazelwood, colors by Tatjana Wood, and letters by John Costanza. Tom Grummett also contributes to the art, and the whole thing is edited by venerable Vertigo editor, Karen Berger. Although this run is only (only!) 26 issues, there’s an interesting evolution that takes place within it. At the start, the premise is simply that Animal Man (a relatively obscure and forgotten hero upon this run’s publication in the late ‘80s) can adapt the powers of any animal nearby. This imbues him with a greater sensitivity to the plight of animals, which leads him to become a vegetarian and do things like fight companies and scientists who experiment on animals (see above). At the same time, he’s juggling a young family. This is the central premise for the first four issues or so, but as we’ll see later in the week, the narrative ambitions here quickly become much greater.
