Sony is Producing a New Doc Savage TV Series

Before the Man of Steel, there was the Man of Bronze. And now, Sony is gearing up to introduce him to a whole new generation of audiences. Via Deadline, Sony Pictures Television is developing a new Doc Savage TV series.

Sony will produce the series alongside Neal H. Moritz’s Original Film and Condé Nast Entertainment. Previously, Moritz and Sony were planning to reboot the Doc Savage franchise as a movie with Iron Man 3 helmer Shane Black directing and Dwayne Johnson playing the title role. Unfortunately, the film never got off the ground, but Moritz apparently always felt that a TV show would give them more space to develop the characters.

Doc Savage was created by Henry Ralston, John Nanovic, and Lester Dent and made his debut appearance in his own eponymous magazine in 1933. Also known as Clark Savage, Jr., the character was a jack of all trades: a scientist, a physician, an explorer, a detective, and more. From an early age, he was trained to reach peak physical and mental performance. He also possessed a photographic memory and virtually unmatched martial arts skills.

Over the next several decades, Savage went on to appear in various novels, comics, and radio series. Additionally, a film adaptation hit theaters in 1975 with Ron Ely headlining. The character’s impact on the then-burgeoning superhero genre can’t be understated. In fact, Stan Lee once suggested that without Doc Savage, there wouldn’t be any modern superheroes.

Are you excited to hear that Doc Savage is making a comeback on TV? Who would you cast to play the title character? Tell us what you think in the comment section below!
