Legendary Comic Book Creator Nicola Cuti Dies at 75

Legendary comic book creator Nicola Cuti, also known as Nick Cuti, passed away on Friday, Feb. 21 in Tampa, Florida following a battle with cancer. He was 75 years old.

News of Cuti’s passing was first posted to his official Facebook page, with “sources close to the family” reporting he passed surrounded by family members and close friends, including his daughter Jaymee, his brother Emil and his business partner Nakoma DeMitro.

Cuti was born on Oct 29, 1944. He served in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1972, during which time his first comic strip was published in the French magazine Singular-Plural and his first story “Grub” was published in Creepy Magazine. Cuti is perhaps best known as being the co-creator of such characters as Moonchild the Starbabe and E-Man. Cuti worked on E-Man — a superhero series — alongside friend Joe Stanton. He also created the characters Captain Cosmos, Brightstar and Starflake the Cosmic Sprite.

Over the years, Cuti’s works have been published by such entities as Warren Publishing, Charlton Comics, Marvel Comics and DC Comics. In addition to Creepy and his own creations, Cuti has had a hand in such iconic franchises as Vampirella and Popeye. What’s more, he’s worked alongside such fellow industry legends as Stan Lee, Wally Wood and Bill Black. He is a two-time winner of the Warren’s Ray Bradbury Award as well as a recipient of Comic-Con International: San Diego’s Inkpot honor. In addition to comic books and literature, Cuti worked in the world of cartoons as well, serving as an animation background designer on such projects as 101 Dalmatians, Gargoyles and The Critic.

Cuti is survived by daughter Jaymee Cuti, brother Emil Cuti, Great-Aunt Lee Sica and many cousins.
