Marvel Legends Target Exclusive Red Hulk Review |

“Target always be like, ‘I like that. Do you have it in red?’” – MatthewK

A wise observation from our own Matt K, and fortunately for Target and us, why yes, Marvel does have Hulk in red. In fact, he is a totally different character from the green version we know and love, so when it was going to be time to get Red Hulk in Marvel Legends, it gave us a chance to go back to this awesome Hulk base, but also get us another character for the ranks. After going so long without getting classic comic-based Hulk figure in ML, this represents the fourth instance in less than a year that we have been able to do so, and frankly, I couldn’t be happier. You would think that by this point, there  would be a Hulk for everyone, but I still want more!

Red Hulk is the most divergent take on the “Hulk” character in that span, and while Bruce Banner has gotten classic green, modern green, and classic grey versions, Thunderbolt Ross now steps in with his raging crimson persona. I am positive most collectors figured this release would be a foregone conclusion because it just makes too much sense. Face it, Hasbro is going to want to get their money’s worth out of this new Hulk base, and since it is the best one we have ever seen in ML (in my opinion), I am happy to get another take because Hulk figures are awesome. Plus, Target is pretty much synonymous with the color red when it comes to the retail space, so again, duh.

This figure is just now making it out there to stores, and my wife actually stumbled upon this one for me as she was doing some shopping to prep for our self-imposed exile (due to the Corona Virus suggested “social distancing”), so if this is the last figure I pick up off of a store shelf for a while, I am glad it is such a strong offering. I will admit that I have not read a ton of stories featuring Red Hulk, but I have enjoyed my exposure to the character (I mean, I know TB Ross well), and it is a good concept that makes a lot of sense as a foil to Bruce Banner. Sure, this isn’t the first time we have gotten Red Hulk in ML, but it is instantly the best, so if you are one the fence, it is promptly time to come down.

As you can see, the figure is mostly a repainted reuse of the other new Hulk figures, just with a new and very dynamic head sculpt. You get both the fists and and the open hands, and I have to say, this is the first instance of this figure that I actually prefer the open hands on the figure, it just fits the “raging” persona well to me. So, if you love the Hulk base like I do, you pretty much know what you are getting. My favorite strengths of the figure continue to be the overall range of movement, the appropriately chunky proportions, and those wonderful butterfly shoulder joints. Like the previous incarnations, this figure poses so dynamically well, and the joint strength holds up for easy balancing, even in the most severe Hulk poses.

The head is new, as I mentioned, and it is very expressive. I mean, this is a full-on RAGE for Hulk, and much more so than the other versions, b ut that is definitely appropriate. Bruce Banner, despite the anger and collateral damage, is undeniably a hero, but this Hulk is a villain, and he wears it in every detail on his face. It helps too, because the range of all the different expressions within these Hulk figures is so vast, you really get lost in remembering that they are mostly the same figure, so that definitely speaks to the strength detail from one instance to the next. That said, I am going to bet that many will want this head in green for a full on “SMAAAAAAAASH” version of Bruce Hulk because it really is that good.

Yeah, I am going to keep it simple and just reiterate that this is a wonderfully fun figure, and I am really enjoying all of these new ML Hulks. There are still many more to do (Joe Fixit, Smart Hulk, etc.), but for being a version I am not too terribly attached to, I really do love this Red Hulk. Again, he is exclusive to Target and is hitting there now, so be on the lookout, but be responsible in your hunting in these unprecedented times.
