#blackAF

Netflix is full of family-based sitcoms but this one pulls no punches as it tackles some big themes through comedy and a little good old-fashioned shock factor thrown in for good measure. Starring American television writer and producer ‘Kenya Barris’ in his debut acting role as a fictionalised character of himself. Barris stars alongside ‘Rashida Jones’ who plays his on-set wife Joya Barris. The sitcom follows the family of the pair as they navigate life as they do it and the hurdles they must jump in the process. ‘#blackAF’ offers an honest approach to race and culture in parenting and relationships. As you can probably tell from the title this is not one for the younger end of the family. Be prepared as the series flips on its head the whole concept of black situation comedy and tells it how it is.

The Legacy of the Bones

‘The Legacy of the Bones’ is the sequel in a planned trilogy of films based on the novels by Dolores Redondo. The story follows the residents of small-town ‘Baztan’ where Amaia lives (lead character). The story is set a year after Amaia solved the series of murders that cast a shadow over the town. Amaia must now figure out the answers to another mystery in the Baztan valley. The initial film The Invisible Guardian is already available on Netflix. Given that ‘The Legacy of the Bones’ was generally released in December 2019 and has taken over a year since to land on Netflix, there may be some wait for the final film ‘Offering to the Storm’ to be available on Netflix. The final instalment has wrapped filming but has been delayed for general release due to the current Coronavirus situation. It is expected sometime in June 2020 for general release before eventually making it over to the giant streaming platform but who knows, we may see it much sooner, particularly if demand is high after release of ‘The Legacy of the Bones’ this week.

Sergio

The dramatisation of the real-life UN ambassador and peace-keeper; ‘Sérgio Vieira de Mello’. The film follows the steps of Sergio (played by Wagner Moura) the fateful day that, whilst working as the ‘United Nations Special Representative for Iraq’, found himself caught up in an Al-Qaeda terrorist attack. The headquarters in Baghdad where he had begun his short term task of just four months, is the target of a bomb attack and as the building collapses, Sergio is forced to examine his life choices. The film is a tip of the hat by screenplay writer Craig Borten and director Greg Barker to the ambassador Sergio himself who had been tipped for the prestigious role of ‘United Nations Secretary -General’. Also stars ‘Ana de Armas’ as Carolina.

The Willoughbys

Here’s one for the kids in lockdown: The Willoughby family is dysfunctional. The parents hate children and so when their own children decide life would be better without them, the group of siblings set out to send them on a holiday, a very long holiday. What they didn’t count on is that children are not allowed to live without adults even if they are better off without their parents. With ‘family services’ hot on their tails, ‘The Willoughbys’ must set out to find out what makes the perfect family. This new animated tale is inspired by the ‘Lois Lowry’ book of the same title.
