Top 20 Streaming Films of the Week

Watched at Home: Top 20 Streaming Films of the Week

Since the weekly box office has quite literally dissolved to nothing due to a lack of new releases in movie theaters, the next best thing we can do is check out what audiences are watching while quarantined at home. And thanks to the Digital Entertainment Group, we can now see exactly what’s popular with the couch crowd.

“As people shelter in their homes during this pandemic, millions of entertainment lovers are using digital entertainment services much more heavily than in the past. A significant number of people may even be enjoying digital for the first time,” said Amy Jo Smith, president and CEO of the Digital Entertainment Group, who will report the data every Thursday for the time being. “We are launching the Watched at Home Top 20 to show consumers what is new and popular, so that they can more easily make their own great entertainment choices.”

This week’s list features a number of high-profile flicks, notably the divisive finale to the Skywalker saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which currently sits at the No. 1 spot. The space fantasy is followed closely by Sonic: The Hedgehog, which carries the distinction of being the last truly big hit released in theatres before the whole coronavirus thing. Up next is the box office dud Dolittle, and 2020’s current box office champ Bad Boys For Life.

Curiously lacking from the list is The Invisible Man, which was released early to VOD after grossing a cool $125 million at the worldwide box office. Perhaps that $19.99 rental fee was too high for casual audiences, though it should be noted that three other early releases, The Call of the Wild, Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, and Bloodshot currently rank in the top 10.

Even more bizarrely, stay-at-home audiences are giving the box office flop and critically panned Cats a whirl. Me-ouch?
