SHUT IN THEATER: Weekend Reading – Week 4

Well, it was another big week of social distancing and Animal Crossing! Once again, we asked the Beat staff what they’ll be reaching for now that Weekend Reading 4 has arrived.

What will you be reading this weekend? Let us know in the comment section!

Weekend Reading 4: Parable of the Sower

AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend, I’m going to be getting to two books I have been meaning to read for a while now! First, I’m going to finally begin The Wicked + The Divine by Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Matthew Wilson, and Clayton Cowles. Then, I’m going to start a novel that I have been meaning to get around to for far too long: Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler.

Weekend Reading 4: Kill Your Boyfriend/Vinanarama

TAIMUR DAR: Going through my shelves and I discovered a copy of Kill Your Boyfriend/Vimanarama deluxe edition by Grant Morrison and Philip Bond that I picked up in 2018 at SDCC. As a die-hard Nik fan, I’m also finally cracking into Slimed! An Oral History of Nickelodeon’s Golden Age that I got for my birthday last January.

Weekend Reading 4: J&K

ARPAD OKAY: I don’t know what’s in store for me from John Pham’s new book plus record plus bonus activity set J&K. Sweetness? Sadness? Obsessive printmaker delicacies? Sure. Pham’s early series Epoxy and work with Raina Lee on 1-UP MegaZine were some of my first exposures to punk DIY fury put to the service of beautiful production values— I’m looking forward to seeing what someone who opened my eyes to the potential comics have as books has to say today.

Weekend Reading 4: Dune

SAJIDA AYYUP: Ashamed that I’ve never read Dune by Frank Herbert and it took some unbearably amazing first looks from the 2020 film adaptation with Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Issac, Dave Bautista, and you know the rest, to remind me this book exists. I think that’s one aspect of adaptations that we need to be more thankful for: remember to read first!

Weekend Reading 4: Graveyard of Gods

BILLY HENEHAN: This is the weekend I finally dive into Scott Snyder & James Tynion IV’’s Justice League run in earnest. I have the trades for Graveyard of Gods, Hawkworld and The Sixth Dimension sitting in a stack ready to be marathoned. I’m looking forward to seeing some sweet art from Francis Manapul, Howard Porter, Jim Cheung and Jorge Jimenez

Weekend Reading 4: Samurai 8

JOSH HILGENBERG: This weekend has definitely snuck up on me, so I haven’t made a final decision yet – but! Masashi Kishimoto and Akira Okubo’s recent Samurai 8: The Tale of Hachimaru is a definite contender based on its techno take on Samurai. Then again, there’s also Jeff Lemire and Gabriel H. Walta’s Sentient, which I’ve been meaning to get to for awhile now. It’s been far too long since I’ve soaked up Walta’s pages.

Weekend Reading 4: Demon in a Bottle

JOE GRUNENWALD: In the absence of new comics each week, The Marvel Rundown’s been looking at classic Marvel stories. I’ve never been much of an Iron Man fan, but this weekend I’ll be reading the “Demon in a Bottle” storyline by David Michelinie, Bob Layton, and John Romita Jr. Maybe this will inspire me to want to read more Iron Man comics.

Weekend Reading 4: Superman Smashes the Klan

NANCY POWELL: I was lucky enough to pick up the concluding volume to Gene Luen Yang’s Superman Smashes the Klan from my local comic shop, so I’ll be playing catch up with the series. I look forward to completing Lisa Wool-Rim’s Palimpsest. I am absolutely in love with her style of art in this poignant memoir about becoming a mother and reflecting about her own adoption.
