The MCU's Captain Marvel: Discussion and Review (Episode 10)

The MCU's Captain Marvel: Discussion and Review (Episode 10)

Higher, further, faster! This week we dig into our first Marvel Cinematic Universe film on the podcast. We’re talking Carol Danvers, Infinity Stones, and awesome songs from No Doubt in CAPTAIN MARVEL!

For the parents in the room, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is an undeniably unique creation in the history of cinema. Watching Kevin Feige and his team of writers and directors thread the needle in creating the big-screen version of a decade-long splash page epic has been wild. Whether you enjoy the films or not, the accomplishment is undeniable.

Our kids don’t see it this way! Claire was born in 2009. For her, the MCU is something that has always existed. There was no moment of jubilation at the end of IRON MAN with the reveal that we might be watching the first installment of an Avengers project. The obviousness of the success of the franchise has always been true for her.

She was five when GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY came out. Thanks to that movie, The Runaways Cherry Bomb is a staple dance party anthem in our household. In a lot of ways, the MCU is their Star Wars. This cultural juggernaut is a massive part of our family entertainment, all the way down to the cartoons we’ve watched.

Given that impact, I don’t think I can overstate the significance of a movie where the lead character is a woman. Claire has watched some of the DC Extended Universe films, but WONDER WOMAN rocked her world. Representation on the big screen is such an important thing. That movie gave her the chance to see herself as the star of a film. Then when we got to Captain Marvel kicking butt on that ship to No Doubt’s I’m Just A Girl. My goodness, you should have seen her face.

Check back to our previous episode on BLADE to hear her thoughts on that film! She went through significant mental contortions to empathize with the women in that movie just so she could give their characters some background that made any kind of sense. I love that movie, but that story undeniably falls short in that regard. That’s Claire’s experience with a lot of the superhero movies.

Plus, this was an opportunity for me to turn Claire onto Kelly Sue DeConnick’s amazing Captain Marvel. She digs her comics. Although, Claire’s been a Marvel comics fan since I shared Pet Avengers with her. Being able to share stories featuring all types of women, from villains to heroes, has been so important.

Brie Larson is awesome as Captain Marvel. Obviously, it was a treat to see Samuel L. Jackson as a younger, slightly less cynical version of Nick Fury. I think Ben Mendelsohn stole the show as Talos and Keller. Ann Boden and Ryan Fleck did a heckuva job on the film. (Parents: If you’re a Ben Mendelsohn fan, be sure to check out their film MISSISSIPPI GRIND starring Mendelsohn as a degenerate gambler.)

Tune in to the episode to hear Claire’s thoughts on all this!

Original Air Date: March 12, 2019

Parenting while watching movies feels like a minefield. Bill’s challenge is how to introduce his 10-year-old daughter, Claire, at her own request, to more complex entertainment than Saturday morning cartoons. So, they are going on an adventure to expand her cinematic horizons. Each episode, they’ll watch a movie and then have a conversation to analyze what they saw. Listen along with your kids and let us know what they think!
