HBO Max Greenlights 3 Dramas From J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Including ‘Justice League Dark’ & Series Based On ‘The Shining’

HBO Max has greenlit three new shows from J.J. Abrams’ and Katie McGrath’s production company Bad Robot, which include DC’s Justice League Dark‘, Overlook, based at the infamous hotel from ‘The Shining’ featuring iconic characters, along with original drama Duster.

Out of the three series, the one that has us most excited is, of course, ‘Justice League Dark’. Unfortunately, it is also the one with the least details… All the official statement says is that it is “a major series based on DC characters in the Justice League Dark Universe”, which doesn’t really narrow things down much!

For those of you unfamiliar with ‘Justice League Dark’, the original book was created in 2011 by Peter Milligan, and was a team formed to deal with the more magical and mystical threats within the DC comic book universe. Much like the main Justice League, the list of characters involved changes from story to story, but has included some familiar faces such as Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Doctor Fate, Deadman, and even Wonder Woman. There have also been some lesser-known characters such as Frankenstein, I, Vampire’s Andrew Bennett, Madame Xanadu, Detective Chimp, Man-Bat and The Phantom Stranger. It’s fair to say, they are not short of characters to pick from!

Of course, we have seen some of these characters on the small screen already. Most notably Matt Ryan as ‘Constantine’ on his own show and on ‘Legends Of Tomorrow’, and the tragically cancelled too soon ‘Swamp Thing’ series on DC Universe. Could we see Matt Ryan jump across to another show? Whilst this isn’t an Arrowverse show, neither was the original ‘Constantine’ series, so it wouldn’t be out of the question. It would also be great if they could reutilise some of the amazing work the production & creative teams did on the ‘Swamp Thing’ series.

‘Overlook’ is set to be a horror/thriller series and is set to featuring iconic characters from Stephen King’s ‘The Shining’. The drama will “explores the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction.” This marks the second collaboration for Bad Robot, King and Warner Bros, who previously teamed up on the Hulu series ‘Castle Rock’. In fact, ‘Castle Rock’ co-creator/EP Dustin Thomason and co-exec producer Scott Brown are said to be in negotiations to write the new series, and are looking to approach it in a similar way to how ‘Bates Motel’ worked with its source material, ‘Psycho’.

‘Duster’ is a completely original story from J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan (‘Into the Badlands’, ‘The Walking Dead’). Set in the 1970s, the series follows a gutsy getaway driver for a growing crime syndicate, whose life goes from awful to wildly, stupidly, dangerously awful.

All three series will be exec produced by Abrams and Bad Robot Head of Television, Ben Stephenson.  Bad Robot’s EVP of Television, Rachel Rusch Rich, will serve as a co-executive producer. Warner Bros. International Television Distribution serves as the global distributor.

“What an amazing start to our association with the wildly imaginative Bad Robot team under J.J. and Katie,” commented Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer of HBO Max. “What could be better than an original J.J. idea and then Warner Bros. letting them loose on iconic IP from Stephen King and the DC Universe and to provide more must-have programming on HBO Max.”

There are currently no premiere dates set for any of these dramas, but we wouldn’t expect them to appear on HBO Max in the USA before 2021, given the current climate. HBO Max shows are not covered under the HBO/Sky carriage deal, so there is no telling where they could land in the UK, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
