Stan Lee, a writer-editor, and Steve Ditko, a writer-artist, invented Spider-Man, a fictitious superhero. In the Silver Age of Comic Books, he originally appeared in the anthology comic book Amazing Fantasy #15 (August 1962). He has appeared in a number of movies, television shows, and video game adaptations based in the Marvel Universe, as well as in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

Spider-Man is the alter ego of Peter Parker, an orphan raised in New York City by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben after his parents, Richard and Mary Parker, died in a plane crash. Many supporting characters, including J. Jonah Jameson, Harry Osborn, Max Modell, romantic interests Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson, and enemies such as Doctor Octopus, the Green Goblin, and Venom, joined Lee and Ditko in having the character grapple with adolescent troubles and financial issues.

After being bitten by a radioactive spider, he has spider-like powers such as adhering to surfaces, superhuman strength and agility, and the ability to detect danger with his “spider-sense.” He then creates wrist-mounted “web-shooter” gadgets that fire his own artificial spider-webbing.

Teenagers in superhero comic books were traditionally restricted to the role of sidekick to the protagonist when Spider-Man first emerged in the early 1960s. The Spider-Man series broke new ground by starring Peter Parker, a high school student from Queens who was Spider-secret Man’s identity and with whom young readers could identify with his “self-obsessions with rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness.”

While Spider-Man had all the characteristics of a sidekick, unlike previous teen heroes such as Bucky and Robin, he lacked the superhero mentorship of Captain America and Batman, and thus had to learn for himself that “with great power comes great responsibility”—a line included in a text box in the final panel of the first Spider-Man story but later retroactively attributed to his guardian, the late Uncle Ben Parker.

Spider-Man has appeared in various Marvel comic book series, the first and most popular of which being The Amazing Spider-Man. Peter Parker evolved from a quiet, nerdy New York City high school student to a disturbed but gregarious college student, to a married high school teacher, to a single freelance photographer in the late 2000s. He joins the Avengers, Marvel’s flagship superhero squad, in the 2010s.

Spider-adversary Man’s Following a body swap plot in which Peter appears to die, Doctor Octopus assumed the identity for a narrative arc spanning 2012–2014. Spider-Man 2099, which depicts the adventures of Miguel O’Hara, the Spider-Man of the Future; Ultimate Spider-Man, which depicts the adventures of a teenaged Peter Parker in an alternate universe; and Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, which depicts the teenager Miles Morales, who takes up the mantle of Spider-Man after Ultimate Peter Parker’s supposed death. Miles is eventually reintroduced into the main series, where he occasionally collaborates with Peter.

Spider-Man is one of the most well-known and financially successful superheroes in the world. He has appeared in various kinds of media as Marvel’s main character and company mascot, including several animated and live-action television series, syndicated newspaper comic strips, and a series of films. Danny Seagren played Spidey for the first time in live action in Spidey Super Stories, a The Electric Company spoof that ran from 1974 until 1977.

Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield have played Spider-Man in films, and Tom Holland has played him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, he was voiced by Chris Pine and Jake Johnson. In the 2010 Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, Reeve Carney played Spider-Man. [As a superhero and comic book character, Spider-Man has been warmly welcomed, and he is frequently listed as one of the most popular and iconic comic book characters of all time, as well as one of the most popular characters in all fiction.
