Game of Thrones Star Is Now a Weightlifting Record-Breaker

The actor who portrayed Gregor Clegane, better known as “The Mountain That Rides,” on Game of Thrones broke a record in deadlifting.

Hafthor Bjornsson, also known as “Thor,” ESPN reports, set the record on Saturday in his native country, Iceland. Standing at 6-foot-9 and weighing 425 pounds, the 31-year-old lifted 1,104.52 pounds (501 kilograms). The record sat unbroken for four years at 1,102.31 pounds (500 kilograms), which was previously set by England’s Eddie Hall.

Bjornsson believes he could have lifted more, but didn’t see the point in doing so. “I’m happy with this,” he says. “My family and friends, they were happy with this, and I’ve decided to call it.” He documented the momentous occasion with a video, which he has posted on his Instagram.

This is not the only time Bjornsson has demonstrated his strength. Along with the workout videos he posts on social media, he has competed in the Strongest Man Competition since 2012. He placed third or better every year until 2018 when he finally came in first place.

Bjornsson starred on Game of Thrones throughout most of its run, appearing in five of the HBO drama’s eight seasons. Conan Stevens played Clegane in Season 1, while Ian Whyte took on the role for Season 2.
