Adam Tsekhman on Gary’s Future

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for “Ship Broken,” the latest episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Rest in peace, Gary Jr. We hardly knew you.

In “Ship Broken,” the latest episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Gary Green picked up an emotional support dog — from hell. Of course, this dog just so happened to belong to Son of Sam and even talked the notorious serial killer into committing some of his most heinous crimes. Thankfully, John Constantine was able to banish him back to hell, but Gary hasn’t given up on emotional support animals. He even got himself a new rabbit he calls Gary Jr. Jr., and it seems like he may have a bit more luck this time around.

Speaking to CBR, Legends star Adam Tsekhman reflected on the events of the episode and what they mean for Gary moving forward. He discussed the difference between working with Felicia the dog and the rabbit who played Gary Jr. Jr., as well as Gary’s continuing apprenticeship to Constantine. He revealed the full contents of the letter giving him permission to have an emotional support animal and shared his dream storyline for his character. He also promised “more” from Gary down the line, recalled Matt Ryan’s “magnum opus” performance and more.

CBR: Do you think Gary is going to have any more luck with Gary Jr. Jr.?

Adam Tsekhman: Oh, absolutely. Gary Jr. Jr. is less threatening than Gary Jr. and ridiculously cute. Who knew? Who knew you would find something cuter than Gary Jr.? And I think Gary Jr. Jr. is cuter.

What was the difference between working with Gary Jr. and Gary Jr. Jr.?

I was actually shocked how both of them were extremely calm and relaxed in my arms. From the beginning, both of them were just totally chill. So I don’t know if that was the Gary-ness that was calming them and making them feel comfortable or what it was, but they were both extremely great to work with. Yeah, I’m just looking right now — I have the emotional support letter. I’m looking at it and it is incredible.

Oh, what does the letter say?

It says, “To whom it may concern:

“Gary Greene is a patient under my professional care. He meets the criteria and definition of disabled under the Americans with Disabilities Act. I’m aware of Mr. Greene’s medical history and his limitations due to his condition. As a result of Mr. Greene’s disability, he has certain limitations in social interactions, high stress situations, decision making and baking. Therefore, to assist Mr. Greene with these difficulties and for his overall well-being when flying, I am recommending an emotional support animal to help him deal with his emotional disability.

“As a mental health professional, I’m well aware of the significant benefits the emotional support animal provides for people such as Mr. Greene. Please allow Mr. Greene to be accompanied by his emotional support animal wherever he may go, regardless of limitations around animals being present.

“I, Dr. Morgan McConnell, am not responsible for the emotional support animal’s behavior, and Mr. Greene is 100% liable for his emotional support animal’s behavior and any damage caused by the emotional support animal. This letter should suffice as proof of certification of obtaining and keeping an emotional support animal.”

I was wondering if they’d make it jokey or completely serious!

It’s quite serious! There’s a couple little moments and clearly the liability part at the end is stressed.

I’ve got to be honest, the moment where Sara snapped Gary’s neck really got me for a second. When you learned about that scene, were you afraid that was it?

Yeah, I just read it in the script. So I wasn’t as nervous that Gary would be done for, but I was a little nervous. I certainly was a little nervous. I think at that point, I had known that there was more coming for Gary, so I knew that there would be some sort of explanation for it, but it was it was a little nerve-wracking.

How will we see Gary’s apprenticeship with Constantine develop over the last few episodes of the season?

I mean, I think Gary’s discovering a little bit of courage, which Constantine rubbed off on him because that’s something that Gary’s usually doesn’t really excel at. So we will see that in a later episode. In terms of his spells, the fact that he was able to take them to Hell in the last episode I think was a quite a glowing review of Constantine’s ability to teach Gary. So, yeah, we’ll see a little bit more of that. Absolutely.

Will we see him using more magic, then?

Maybe!

What is it like to work with Matt Ryan?

Oh, it’s been fantastic. He’s an incredible actor. The episode where Constantine has lung cancer — watching him do that episode was just incredible. He was actually sick at the time, so it was almost as if his body was preparing him for this episode. Every moment, every cough, he was bringing it every time, when the camera even wasn’t on him. It was like a real magnum opus of a performance by Matt and it was a pleasure to just be witnessing it.

What is your dream storyline for Gary?

Oh, interesting question. Ooh. It would be nice if Gary would have one requited love. I mean, somebody! Anybody! Give the man a break! So yeah, maybe falling in love and then being the ultimate bad guy. Both. [laughs]

He couldn’t even keep hold of Gary Jr. Poor guy!

True. Yeah, I don’t think he would have much success as a bad guy.

What do you think Gary would use the Loom of Fate for?

Oh, interesting. Maybe go back to his high school years and affect his popularity. Just be like the guy that everyone thinks is cool. I got the Loom of Fate! Everybody likes me!

If you could pick any time period to visit, what and where would it be and why?

It would be cool to go to Woodstock in the 60s. That would be kind of awesome. I guess we already went there on Legends. I feel like in the in the past, yeah, I like the idea of Woodstock. Or it would be nice to just go back to like November 2019.

Airing Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow stars Caity Lotz, Dominic Purcell, Nick Zano, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Tala Ashe, Matt Ryan and Jes Macallan.
