One of the unique challenges of animated movies is the need to draw characters into existence. These characters could be human beings, but they’re also just as likely to be talking animals, magical creatures or enchanted household objects. That means every character seen on-screen in an animated movie was a unique challenge whose design filmmakers deeply considered. Because of the challenge of getting a character just right, animated movies often go through numerous concepts for each one before settling on a final design. This process has left us with a treasure trove of concept art from Disney’s myriad animated movies.

In this video, we’re taking a look at some unique examples of original Disney character concept art. We’ll see early ideas for Woody and Buzz from Toy Story, Genie from Aladdin, Ralph from Wreck-It Ralph and even Snow White from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. These designs demonstrate just how far a character can come from their original iterations to the final product we come to know and love.
