A high school student short film project. Sequel to Ghostbusters: The Beginning.

Ghostbusters is a supernatural comedy film that was released in 1984 in the United States. It was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, and Ivan Reitman directed and produced the picture. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis are starring in it as the eccentric parapsychologists Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Egon Spengler, respectively, who launch a ghost-catching business in New York City. Annie Potts, William Atherton, and Ernie Hudson also appear in the film in supporting roles in addition to the main cast members Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis.

Aykroyd thought of Ghostbusters as a movie starring himself and John Belushi, in which they would adventure through time and space fighting otherworldly perils. His inspiration for the project came from his personal obsession with spirituality. After Belushi passed away in 1982, and after Aykroyd’s idea was determined to be financially unfeasible, Ramis was recruited to assist in the rewriting of the script in order to relocate the action to New York City and make it more accurate. It was the first comedy film to use expensive special effects, and because of the film’s comparatively high budget of $25–30 million, Columbia Pictures had very little faith in the film’s potential to perform well at the box office.

New York City and Los Angeles served as the locations for the filming, which took place between October 1983 and January 1984. Richard Edlund used a portion of the budget to establish Boss Film Studios, which used a combination of practical effects, miniatures, and puppets to deliver the ghoulish visuals. This was done because there was competition for special effects studios at the time among various films that were in the process of development at the same time.

The film Ghostbusters was initially released on June 8, 1984, and quickly became a cultural phenomenon after receiving positive reviews. Murray’s performance was frequently singled out for acclaim, and the film as a whole was praised for its successful combination of comedy, action, and horror. It was the highest-grossing comedy ever at the time, earning $282.2 million during its initial run in theatres, which made it the second-highest grossing film of 1984 in the United States and Canada. It was the highest-grossing film in theatres for seven weeks in a row and one of just four movies that year to make more than $100 million. As a result of subsequent theatrical releases, the film’s total gross has climbed to over $295.2 million, establishing it as one of the most successful comedies released during the 1980s. It was added to the National Film Registry in 2015 after being chosen for archival status by the Library of Congress. The title track, “Ghostbusters,” performed by Ray Parker Jr., also reached number one on the charts.

The success of the Ghostbusters series sparked the beginning of a multi-billion dollar, multi-media franchise thanks to its influence on popular culture and its devoted fan following. This consisted of the well-known animated television series The Real Ghostbusters (1986), as well as its sequel Extreme Ghostbusters (1997), as well as video games, board games, comic books, clothes, music, and haunted attractions. Ghostbusters was followed by Ghostbusters II in 1989, which did less well financially and critically. Attempts to make a second sequel were halted in 2014 after Ramis’ death, and there are currently no plans to develop a third instalment. In November 2021, a second sequel to the film that was released in 1984, titled Ghostbusters: Afterlife, was released. This came after a reboot in 2016 got negative reviews and underperformed financially.
