Evo 2020 Canceled Due To COVID-19, Organizers Planning Digital Event

The organizers behind the Evolution Championship Series (Evo) have announced that its 2020 event is canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Evo 2020 was originally scheduled to take place July 31 to August 2 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nev. Instead of a physical event, the Evo team is creating an online event, which will occur this summer.

You can see the full statement from the Evo team below.

Since the postponement of Game Developers Conference in March, nearly every game industry event has been either canceled or postponed, including E3 and Gamescom. While GDC and Gamescom subsequently announced digital alternatives to their canceled shows, the uncertainty of when it will be safe to hold large in-person gatherings looms. With digital events being the only option for now, The Game Awards’ Geoff Keighley today announced Summer Game Fest to fill the hole left by the bevy of expo cancellations and to help bridge the gap between publishers and fans.

According to the Evo organizers, we will learn more about the team’s planned online event soon. Hopefully that means we’ll still get a chance to see the best fighting game competitors duke it out later this summer, even if that presents additional technical challenges.
