“Avatar: The Last Airbender” combined serialized storytelling, beautiful animation, and Asian mythology to create one of the biggest hit shows in the history of Nickelodeon.

The show ran from 2005 to 2008 and was a consistent success in the eyes of both critics and viewers. Since the show started streaming on Netflix, the series has become one of the platform’s most-watched offerings. Netflix has also started producing a live-action adaptation of the series, which should hit screens in 2021.

The show has also moved from the animated realm into the four-color world of comic books. Dark Horse Comics published several mini-series that explored the narrative, the characters, and the settings in greater depth. Hardcore fans of the show got to see glimpses into the Four Nations, both before and after the end of the Hundred Years War.

Some of these comics featured new looks for these iconic characters. Other stories showed the characters in a new light. With some books occurring after the events of the show, the comics can show the characters as they grow and mature, both physically and emotionally. These comics also served as a bridge in the seventy-year time gap between the end of “The Last Airbender” and the start of the sequel series, “The Legend of Korra”.

For completists fans or those who want to see other aspects of their favorite characters, these comics give them what they crave. In this video, we’re going to look at the differences between the animated Avatar cast and their comic book counterparts.
