The video game industry has risen from a small-time, children’s hobby, to a multi-billion-dollar industry. No longer are video games just weird, children pastimes. They have now become large-scale, global events, with the release of many video games, like Cyberpunk 2077, or Witcher 3, have been huge events, looked-forward to by multiple millions of people worldwide.

With the massive popularity that video games have seen since their inception, it was only a matter of time before they got the attention of Hollywood. Unfortunately, most video game films have not ended up great. Fortunately, most of these bad video game films are either so laughably bad that they provide a dose of entertainment, or just plain goofy. Let’s take a look at a few video game films which fail as films, but not as entertainment.

Super Mario Bros.

In 1993, husband-and-wife team Anabel Jankel and Rocky Morton tried their hand at adapting one of the most popular video games of all time, Super Mario Bros. The film stars Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as the titular Mario brothers. The film was a huge flop, both financially, and critically, and currently has a score of 28% on popular, review-aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes.

In recent years, the film has gotten, a sort of, underground, cult-following, with people enjoying just how terrible, and ridiculous it is. With hammy, and over-the-top performances by both the two stars, and Dennis Hopper who portrays the villain, President Koopa, the film has won over the hearts of Mario fans, and bad movie fans from all over the world.

Mortal Kombat

Infamous for being one of the most violent video games, Mortal Kombat was adapted to film in 1995. The film was actually a huge financial success, with many people still claiming that it is one of the rare video game properties with a proper film adaptation. The film, in-and-on itself is not a good film. However, as an adaptation of Mortal Kombat it is a great film, providing the martial arts, fantasy, and violence which the original game was known for. It also features a number of fan favorite Mortal Kombat characters like Goro, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero.

In 2021, the Mortal Kombat film series was rebooted, and while the new film was successful, it was not as successful, nor as beloved as the original.

The Resident Evil Series

Fans will forever debate the quality of the Resident Evil film franchise. What is not in question is, the films are eminently fun, with great action, decent horror, and a lot of inventive and interesting monster designs, which were ripped straight out of the video games.
