Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, two American comic book authors, invented the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. It tells the storey of Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo, four anthropomorphic turtle brothers who fight evil in New York City using ninjitsu.

The characters were created by Eastman and Laird as a satire of aspects prominent in superhero comics at the time. They formed Mirage Studios in 1984 and self-published the first issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which was a huge hit. They licenced the characters to Playmates Toys, who created an action figure line based on the Turtles. Between 1988 and 1992, almost $1.1 billion in Turtles toys were sold, making them the third-best-selling toy figures of all time.

The action figurines were promoted with an animated series that began airing in 1987 and lasted nearly a decade. Because of its violent overtones, the word “ninja” was replaced with “hero” in various European regions. In the 1990s, three live-action films were released, the first of which became the highest-grossing independent film at the time. Viacom, now Paramount Global, bought the franchise in 2009. A new comic series, two new live-action films, and a new animated series were all commissioned by Viacom.
