Those who received invitations to the Met Gala 2022 were encouraged to dress in “white tie” and “gilded splendour,” which resulted in some stunning fashion moments. Kim Kardashian slipping into Marilyn Monroe’s most iconic dress on the Met steps, Blake Lively being unwrapped to show her second dress on the Met steps, and other celebs alluding to the past in sequins, tulle, corsets, and dramatic headpieces, this year’s red carpet was one to remember.

This annual fundraising gala, formally known as the Costume Institute Gala or the Costume Institute Benefit, is held in New York City in support of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Met Gala, or Met Ball, is a formal name for the annual fundraising gala that benefits the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the fashion world, it is often considered to be the most prestigious event of the year, and invitations are highly sought after. Celebrities from a wide range of disciplines, including fashion, cinema, television, music, sports, and social media, are frequently invited to the gala, which is organised by the American fashion magazine Vogue and hosted in New York City.

The gala is held on the first Monday in May each year and is open to the public. It marks the beginning of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibition on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, which will be on display for the next two months. Several of the participants have been photographed for Vogue magazine’s covers and pages. The guest list has evolved to include personalities from a variety of fields, including business, politics, and the performing arts.  Because guests are expected to curate their formal attire, which is primarily haute couture, to coincide with that year’s Costume Institute exhibition, each year’s event celebrates a specific theme associated with that year’s exhibition. The exhibition serves as a model for the formal attire worn on the night, which is primarily haute couture. Since 1995, Anna Wintour, an American journalist and editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine, has chaired or co-chaired the Met Gala.

Founded in 1948 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert to generate funds for the newly founded Costume Institute and to commemorate the inauguration of its yearly display, the Met Gala was the first major fundraising event for the institute. Ticket prices for the first gala were fifty dollars per person, and it was a supper event. [6] During the first few decades of its history, the gala was simply one of many yearly fundraisers organised to support charity organisations in New York City. Thus, the early galas were attended nearly exclusively by members of New York’s high society or the city’s fashion business, which explains why they were so successful. From 1948 through 1971, the event was held at several locations throughout New York City, including the Waldorf-Astoria, Central Park, and the Rainbow Room.

In the realm of social events, the Gala is often considered to be one of the most exclusive and elite gatherings. It is also one of the most successful fundraising events in New York City, with a total of US$9 million raised in 2013 and a record-breaking total of $12 million raised in 2014. Among the most significant sources of income for the Institute, the Met Gala is one of the most notable, with total contributions exceeding $200 million for the first time following the 2019 event. Anna Wintour, who will serve as the event’s chairperson, was appointed to the Institute’s chairmanship in 1995. In addition, according to Wintour, the Met Gala is held on the first Monday in May each year. In time, her guest list grew to include personalities from all walks of life, including the worlds of fashion, entertainment, business, sports, and politics, many of whom would go on to grace Vogue’s pages.

When Diana Vreeland joined the Costume Institute as a consultant in 1972, the Gala began to take on a more glamorous tone, despite the fact that it was still geared toward the affluent.

After a few years, the event began to attract more high-profile celebs, with participants like Elizabeth Taylor, Andy Warhol, Bianca Jagger and Diana Ross, as well as Elton John, Liza Minnelli, Madonna, and Cher mingling with the city’s social elite.  It was during the Vreeland era that the Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted its first Gala and that the first Gala themes were presented.

The Met Gala has taken place every year since 1948, with the exception of the years 2000 and 2002, when it did not take place.

Each year’s event celebrates the specific theme of that year’s Costume Institute exhibition, and the exhibition sets the tone for the formal attire of the night, as guests are expected to curate their fashion, which is mostly haute couture, to match the theme of the exhibit. The Costume Institute exhibition is held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Since 1995, Anna Wintour, an American journalist and editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine, has chaired or co-chaired the Met Gala.
