An earthen pot is referred to by the Urdu and Hindi words matki (or matka). It is used as a “water storage cooler” in homes across the Indian subcontinent. It has been in use since antiquity and is present in homes of all social classes.

They are created by combining two different types of mud clay, the first of which is collected from the earth’s surface and the second of which is obtained after digging more than ten feet beneath the surface. A matka requires a significant amount of time to make. It takes at least 8 days to complete the process.

The clay is combined with water, formed, finished, and polished before being dried and cooked for five days in a kiln. Finally, it is transformed into a finished eastern earthen pot, a water cooler. The earthen pots in India have changed recently, with taps being added for the convenience of the public.

Evaporative cooling is the method used for cooling. The water inside the pot cools down compared to the outside temperature due to capillary action, which causes water to evaporate from the tiny pores. As a result, it is only utilised in the summer and not the winter.
