The term “metaverse” is used in futurology and science fiction to refer to a possible future iteration of the Internet in which it exists as a single, universal, and immersive virtual world. This future iteration is made possible by the use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) headsets. In common usage, the term “metaverse” refers to a network of three-dimensional virtual worlds whose primary emphasis is on social interaction.

A combination of the words “meta” and “universe,” the phrase “metaverse” was first used in the science fiction novel Snow Crash, which was published in 1992. Because there is a growing demand for immersion, the development of the metaverse is frequently related to the advancement of virtual reality technology. Web3, an idea for a decentralised version of the internet, has been a driving force behind the recent uptick in interest in the construction of metaverses. For the purposes of public relations, the buzzwords Web3 and The Metaverse have been used to overstate the amount of progress that has been made in the development of a variety of technologies and projects that are linked. Worries around information privacy, user addiction, and user safety are prevalent in the metaverse. These concerns are a direct result of difficulties confronted by the social media and video game industry as a whole.

The American corporation Meta Platforms is the owner of the social networking and social media platform Facebook, which is located online. FaceBook was established in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes, all of whom were students at Harvard College at the time. The name of the company comes from the face book directories that are frequently distributed to students at American universities. In the beginning, membership was only open to students at Harvard University, but that changed over time to include students at other colleges in North America. Since 2006, membership is open to everyone who is over the age of 13. As of the year 2020, Facebook reported having 2.8 billion monthly active users, placing it in fourth place among all users of the internet worldwide. It was the smartphone application that received the most downloads in the 2010s.

Facebook may be accessed from any device that has Internet connectivity, including mobile phones, tablets, and personal computers. Users are able to establish a profile that contains information about themselves once they have registered on the website. They have the ability to post text, images, and other forms of multimedia, which are then made available to other users who have accepted their invitation to be their “friend,” or, depending on the privacy settings they choose, to the general public. In addition, users are able to contact with one another directly using Facebook Messenger, join groups that share a common interest, and receive notifications on the actions of their Facebook friends and the pages they follow.
