Metric is a Canadian rock band that was formed in the year 1998 in the city of Toronto, in the province of Ontario. Emily Haines (lead vocals, synthesisers, guitar, tambourine, harmonica, piano), James Shaw (guitar, synthesisers, theremin, backing vocals), Joshua Winstead (bass, synthesisers, backing vocals), and Joules Scott-Key are the members of the band. Joules Scott-Key plays the bass guitar and Joules Scott-Key plays the piano (drums, percussion). The two musicians, Haines and Shaw, first came together as a pair in 1998 and gave themselves the name “Mainstream.”  Following the release of an extended play (EP) dubbed Mainstream EP, they rebranded themselves as Metric.

Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? was the title of the band’s debut studio album, which was issued in the year 2003. The album Live It Out, which was published in 2005, was put forward for consideration for the Polaris Music Prize in the category of “Canadian Album of the Year” in 2006, as well as for the Juno Awards in the category of “Best Alternative Album” in 2006. Grow Up and Blow Away, which is their third studio album, was recorded in 2001; it was initially meant as their first album, but was postponed for many years and finally released in 2007, with minor adjustments.

Fantasies is the title of Metric’s fourth studio album, which was released in 2009. It was nominated for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize in the “Canadian Album of the Year” category, and it ended up winning the “Alternative Album of the Year” award at the Juno Awards in 2010. In addition, Metric was awarded “Group of the Year” in 2010. The year 2012 saw the release of Synthetica, Metric’s fifth studio album overall. At the 2013 Juno Awards, the band took home two trophies: one for “Alternative Album of the Year” for Synthetica, and another for “Producer of the Year” for Shaw. Justin Broadbent, who worked as an art director, designer, and photographer, also took home a trophy for “Recording Package of the Year” for his work on Synthetica. Pagans in Vegas, Metric’s sixth studio album, was released in the year 2015.

The band’s seventh studio album, entitled Art of Doubt and produced by Justin Meldal-Johnson, was made available for purchase on September 21, 2018.
