Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton teamed up for the screenplay of The Son, a drama film set to be released in 2022 under Zeller’s direction. It’s adapted from Zeller’s play of the same name, which premiered onstage in 2018. The movie is a sequel to 2020’s The Father. The film features Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, Vanessa Kirby, Zen McGrath, Hugh Quarshie, and Anthony Hopkins in starring roles.

Sony Pictures Classics will release The Son in the United States on November 25 2022, after it made its international premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 7. Critics were divided on this one, with some praising the film for its performances by Jackman, Hopkins, and Kirby and others criticising the film’s direction, script, and McGrath in particular.

plot
Two years after his parents’ split, Nicholas, now 17, decides he can no longer live with his mom, Kate. He is moving in with his father, Peter, and his stepmother, Beth. Peter tries to provide for Nicholas the way he would have liked his own father to provide for him despite having to juggle work, his and Beth’s new son, and the offer of his dream position in Washington. While he is trying to fix the mistakes of the past, he is unable to maintain his grip on Nicholas in the present.
