About Batman

Batman is a fictional superhero who appears in comic books written and published in the United States by DC Comics. On March 30, 1939, the character had his first appearance in the comic book Detective Comics, which was the 27th issue of that publication. The character was developed by the artist Bob Kane and the writer Bill Finger. Bruce Wayne, a wealthy American playboy, philanthropist, and industrialist who lives in Gotham City, is revealed to be Batman in the continuity of the DC Universe. Bruce Wayne uses the alias Batman. The story of how Batman came to be begins with him swearing vengeance against criminals after witnessing the murder of his parents, Thomas and Martha. However, this is a vendetta that is tempered by the notion of justice. He puts himself through rigorous mental and physical preparation, adopts a character that is inspired by the bat, and patrols the streets of Gotham City at night. Kane, Finger, and other creators accompanied Batman with supporting characters, such as his sidekicks Robin and Batgirl; allies Alfred Pennyworth, James Gordon, and Catwoman; and foes such as the Penguin, the Riddler, Two-Face, and his archenemy the Joker. These characters appeared in Batman comics beginning in 1939.

Although Kane frequently claimed sole creative credit for Batman, Finger greatly refined the concept from a generic superhero into something more bat-like. Batman was conceived by Kane in the early part of 1939 with the intention of capitalising on the popularity of DC’s Superman. In 1940, the character Batman was given his very own spin-off periodical called simply Batman. Batman was initially presented as a brutal vigilante who frequently killed or maimed criminals. Over time, however, the character developed into one who adheres to a strict moral code and has a strong sense of justice. Batman, in contrast to the majority of comic book characters, does not have any special abilities; rather, he relies on his intelligence, combat prowess, and riches. The Batman television series from the 1960s utilised a camp aesthetic, which became synonymous with the character in the years that followed the conclusion of the show. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, a number of creators worked on reverting the character back to his more sinister origins. Frank Miller’s miniseries The Dark Knight Returns, which debuted in 1986, was the culmination of these efforts.

Batman has appeared in a great number of comic books produced by DC, including comics released under the company’s own banners like Vertigo and Black Label. The title of the longest-running comic book in the United States goes to Detective Comics, the Batman comic that has been published the longest. Batman is commonly shown as a member of groups like the Justice League and the Outsiders, along with other DC superheroes like Superman and Wonder Woman. These groups include the Justice League and the Outsiders. Dick Grayson, the first Robin, from 2009 to 2011; and Jace Fox, son of Wayne’s ally Lucius, as of 2021, are some of the characters who have donned the Batman persona on occasion in addition to Bruce Wayne. Other characters who have donned the Batman persona include Jean-Paul Valley / Azrael in the 1993–1994 “Knightfall” story arc; Dick Grayson; and Jace Fox. DC Comics has also published comics featuring alternative incarnations of Batman. These include the incarnation seen in The Dark Knight Returns and its successors, the incarnation from the Flashpoint (2011) event, and numerous interpretations from Elseworlds stories. These comics can be found in DC’s extensive back catalogue.

Batman, which is considered to be one of the most iconic figures in popular culture, has been ranked among the greatest comic book superheroes and fictional characters that have ever been conceived. Because he is one of the most commercially successful superheroes, his likeness has been licenced and featured in a variety of media and items that is sold throughout the world. This includes toy lines such as Lego Batman and video game series such as the Batman: Arkham series. Batman has been adapted in live-action and animated incarnations, such as the 1960s Batman television series played by Adam West and in film by Michael Keaton in Batman (1989), Batman Returns (1992), The Flash (2023), and Batgirl (2022), Christian Bale in The Dark Knight trilogy (2005–2012), Ben Affleck in the DC Extended Universe (2016–present), and Robert Pattinson in The Batman (2022). The voice of the character has been given by a number of different actors, including Kevin Conroy, Troy Baker, Jason O’Mara, Will Arnett, and Keanu Reeves, among others.
