About The Queens Gambit

In The Queen’s Gambit, we follow the life of an orphaned chess prodigy named Elizabeth Harmon as she strives to become one of the best players in the world despite the fact that she is dealing with emotional issues as well as an addiction to alcohol and drugs. The name of a specific type of chess opening is incorporated into the name of this series. The action of the story takes place between the years 1950 and 1960.

After her mother is killed in a car accident in Lexington, Kentucky, in the 1950s, Beth, who is only eight years old at the time, is placed in an orphanage, where the building’s janitor, Mr. Shaibel, teaches her how to play chess. Beth becomes addicted to the tranquillizer pills that the orphanage gives out on a regular basis to the girls in order to “balance their temperament.” This practise was standard operating procedure at the time. Because of how well she can visualise the board, she improves her chess playing ability quite quickly. A few years later, Beth was given up for adoption to a suburban couple named Alma and Allston Wheatley, who did not have any children of their own. Even though she had no previous experience in competitive chess, Beth entered a tournament while she was still getting used to her new house, and she ended up winning. Alma’s first reaction to Beth’s interest in chess was one of resistance; but, after Beth won her first tournament, Alma became completely supportive of her adoptive daughter’s endeavours to compete in a number of different chess tournaments. She becomes friends with a few other people, including Harry Beltik, a previous champion of the state of Kentucky, Benny Watts, a past champion of the United States National Championship, and D.L. Townes, a journalist and fellow player.

Beth’s dependence on drugs and alcohol gets worse as she climbs to the top of the chess world and begins to reap the financial advantages of her accomplishments financially. She prepares for her greatest challenge to date, a huge international chess tournament in Moscow against the top players in the world, with the assistance of her longest friend Jolene, who she has known since she was a child and with whom she grew up at the orphanage.
