I am currently stuck at home with the kids, their school remains closed after two suspected coronavirus cases from students and teachers returning from Italy. Self-isolating, it’s basically all we are discussing now. The annual Emerald City Comic Con from Reed POP is planned to take place in Seattle in eleven days time, from March 12-15th at the Washington State Convention. As concerns around the spreading of the coronavirus grow, alongside the news that four more victims had died in the Seattle area, the show issued the following statement;
We know ECCC means a lot to a lot of people. Many of us and you have been looking forward to ECCC for a year now, and we will always want the best for this community that we have grown to love so much. ECCC 2020 will take place as scheduled March 12th-15th at the Washington State Convention Center (WSCC) in downtown Seattle. We have implemented enhanced cleaning and sanitization across the show, including adhering to the recommendations set forth in the U.S. EPA’s Emerging Pathogen Policy regarding cleaning disinfectants effective against the COVID-19 virus. We are working closely with the WSCC and our other venue partners and aligning with local, state and federal public health guidelines and agencies. As ECCC approaches we will be constantly reviewing our health protection activities, public health messaging, hygiene and medical control measures with the aim of strengthening our COVID-19 response further in line with up to date public health advice and guidance including that of the CDC. For more information about COVID-19 and response of the WSCC, the State of Washington and the city of Seattle, please refer to our website. We want to express our concern for everyone impacted by the COVID-19 virus. The well-being of our global Reedpop community, from our fans and exhibitors to our staff on-site at every show – is of the utmost importance to Reedpop and we take pride in creating a positive environment to celebrate comics, cosplay and pop culture. We are looking forward to four days of fun and we can’t wait to see you.
However, a number of comic book creators are feeling differently and some have been pulling out. I am told that a number of major guests will be announcing their planned absence from the show today. However, others remain even more committed to attend, simply taking precautions. And some can’t see what the fuss is about. Here are some recent updates on individual comic book people’s social media,
I wasn’t worried about attending any comic conventions and Coronavirus…then I thought about all those people who don’t know how to use deodorant, and if they can’t do that, they probably can’t wash their hands either. Now I’m freaked out.

My mum is in full corona virus panic mode, she is playing every arab mum guilt card to stop me from traveling to Seattle for Emerald City Comic Con next week.

So due to my high risk profile health wise (cardiovascular *and* respiratory issues), I’ve decided to cancel my trip to ECCC. Wishing everyone going a safe con. VERY sad I’m going to miss it and miss you all. Hoping this will all have resolved by NYCC time.

ECCC has announced they’re currently not cancelling, but it COULD happen if shit hits the fan, and some people are demanding they cancel despite them stating they’ll used increased sanitation for safety. I definitely need the income so I’m eeep

So, like a lot of people, I am definitely concerned about attending eccc- particularly if a travel ban comes into effect. I will do everything in my power not to cancel, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t considering it.

so as a chronically ill at-risk person, and because it’s a really bad flu year, AND because of the Corona virus, I’m unfortunately canceling most of my con plans for the year 🙁 I’m so sad to be missing everyone at ECCC next month, but my health is the most important

After finding out about everything going on in Seattle and ECCC…I spoke to my wife and we’ve thought it best I cancel my attendance.

The point of this thread is that I feel completely whackadoo relative to most people every time the decade’s flu panic rolls in.

COMICS FOLKS, with the oncoming threat of Coronavirus (and the news it spreads to dogs & we have 3 with cancer), I’ve decided I need to cancel my appearance at #ECCC – I’m trying to get a refund on my table, but in case ReedPOP won’t, does anyone want a last-minute table? hmu

Some coronavirus stuff that doesn’t seem to be making the news: First 14 Americans diagnosed with coronavirus have already recovered and are fine. Of the 6 deaths in Washington state, 4 were at the same nursing home.
— Zack Davisson @ ECCC Y5 (@ZackDavisson) March 3, 2020
More people have died from the Flu this year than the Corona Virus.
Go to your favorite cons folks. Wash your hands. Don’t touch your face. Sanitize your electronics and hands often.
It’ll be fine.

Looking forward to my second Emerald City Comic Con! In lieu of my usual Doctor Strange cosplay – I am going to opt for a different type of doctor.

Yay, #ECCC badge arrived! But the coronavirus news is just getting worse and worse in Seattle (now up to 6 deaths), so I’m definitely considering whether to even go or not. Hopefully everything is okay in 10 days, but sadly it seems like that’s probably pretty unrealistic rn. 😷 pic.twitter.com/wqxEhu5ZZ2

Do we think they’re gonna cancel ECCC due to Coronavirus? Or are we all just so desperate to leave our winter doldrums that we’re gonna go and bump elbows and bathe in hand sanitizer and hope for health?

1/2 @KCPubHealth With all the info you’ve shared on #COVID19, I’m begging you to advise the cancellation of Emerald City Comic Con. I’m a big fan of #ECCC. But with nearly 100,000 visitors over 4 days, it’s too big a risk to our community. Time is running out. #CancelTheCon
— Julie Rodelli (@julierodelli) March 2, 2020
2/2 @KCPubHealth In 11 days guests from all over the country will pour into the convention center. My concern is that they may become ill and be unable to return home, or they will become infected here and carry #COVID19 to their communities. Time is running out. #CancelTheCon

Hmmm…Corona virus or not to Carona Virus #eccc #comiccon #propass #convention
A lot of comic book folks seem worried about the coronavirus with convention season approaching, but there appears to be a lack of information about the fatality rate in the articles popping up.

Whatever people choose, stay safe out there. Official advice is not to stop travelling, not to stop socialising or having fun and, right now, you are as likely to encounter the virus where you live as at a comic book convention. As I found out myself this week, coming home after going to the London Film And Comic Con.
More as we hear it.
