HBO Is Working On A The Last Of Us Series

A television series based on the post-apocalyptic critically acclaimed PlayStation game The Last of Us is in development at HBO.

The Last of Us

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, The Last of Us series is being helmed by Craig Mazin, who will be taking on the roles as executive producer and writer along with the creative director of the game, Neil Druckmann.

Mazin is known for his work on the critically acclaimed series Chernobyl and stated that he is looking forward to working with Druckmann. “Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus. Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honoured to do it in partnership with Neil.”

The project will be a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions.

The Last of Us was developed by Naughty Dog and takes place roughly twenty years after a post-apocalyptic event caused the near extinction of mankind. The event in question is a biological spore that transforms its victims into flesh-eating human/plant hybrids. The game followed protagonists Joel and Ellie on their journey to find a cure for the biological infection. The series will cover the events from the first game, and could even include some content from the upcoming sequel.

Casey Bloys, the president of HBO programming, is incredibly excited about working with such a talented team in bringing the game’s world to life on the small screen. “This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us to partner with Craig, Neil, Carolyn and the teams at Sony, Naughty Dog and PlayStation to bring the virtual world of this acclaimed game to life.”

With the release of the sequel to The Last of Us just around the corner, we can’t wait to once again return to the detailed post-apocalyptic world that Druckmann and the team at Naughty Dog created.
