Iron Man is a fictional superhero who appears in comic books published in the United States by Marvel Comics. Stan Lee, a writer and editor, collaborated with Larry Lieber, a scripter, on the creation of this character. Artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby were responsible for the character’s design. The character made his debut in the issue #39 of Tales of Suspense, which had a cover date of March 1963, and he was given his own title beginning with issue #1 of Iron Man (May 1968). Also in 1963, the character was one of the founding members of the superhero team known as the Avengers, along with Thor, Ant-Man, Wasp, and the Hulk.

During the course of his kidnapping, wealthy American business magnate, playboy, philanthropist, inventor, and brilliant scientist Anthony Edward Stark sustains a catastrophic chest injury. He is also known as “The Iron Man.” In response to his captors’ attempts to coerce him into creating a weapon of mass destruction, he comes up with the idea of constructing a robotic suit of armour in order to protect himself and break free of their custody. Later on, Stark improves his suit by equipping it with weaponry and several other technical equipment that he developed for his company, Stark Industries. As Iron Man, he defends the globe with progressively more advanced versions of the suit. Stark eventually comes clean about his identity as Iron Man, despite the fact that at first he tried to keep his secret identity hidden.

Iron Man was initially conceived by Stan Lee as a vehicle through which he could investigate themes pertaining to the Cold War, in especially the function played by American industry and technology in the struggle against communism. After that, subsequent re-imaginings of Iron Man moved away from themes relating to the Cold War and toward more contemporary concerns of the day.

Iron Man has spent the majority of his publication history as both a founding member of the superhero team the Avengers and as a protagonist in multiple iterations of his own various comic book series. During this time, the character has also been depicted in a variety of different comic book series. Iron Man is a popular property that has been transformed into a number of animated films and television episodes. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Robert Downey Jr. played the role of Tony Stark in the films Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), The Avengers (2012), Iron Man 3 (2013), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). However, Mick Wingert provided the voice for Tony Stark in the animated series What If..? (2021).
