4 Best Video Games of the 2020s

4 Best Video Games of the 2020s

Before you check the calendar to see whether it’s 2030 already, let’s note that the list of the best video games of the 2020s we prepared for you refers to the games released so far. We know many new projects are ahead, and many titles can affect this list we are about to present. Regardless of the things that will happen in the near future, our picks will always be worth trying. Also, we tried to include games in different categories and genres, so every reader can find at least one option that suits their gaming style. Let’s go!

Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020)

One of Nintendo’s most exciting video game series got a sequel in March 2020. That’s 8 years after the last major title in the series (New Leaf) and 19 years after the original Animal Crossing game was released. So, it’s no surprise that the gameplay was so improved.

Once again, players got the chance to try a social simulation game with exceptional features. Keep in mind that Nintendo Switch is the only console you can use to play Animal Crossing: New Horizons. One of the reasons why this title became so popular is the fact that it was released at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. A life simulation game during a quarantine? What more can you ask for, right?

This release is played in a peaceful, tranquil place where players can showcase their creativity. Every time you start the game, you are taken to a different deserted island that you can arrange in any way you want. You can get into bug catching, fishing, crafting, and fossil hunting. All in all, it’s a game that promises relaxing gameplay, features attractive visuals, and supports creativity.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon (2020)

The eighth installment of the Yakuza main series was released in January 2020. The game’s story takes place in 2019 in Yokohama. Unlike the rest of the titles from this series which are primarily action-adventure games, this one is more like a role-playing video game with turn-based RPG gameplay.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon includes references to the previous titles, but it doesn’t follow the same story. In other words, you don’t have to be familiar with the main story to play the game, even though such knowledge would help you enjoy it more.

This title by SEGA includes a fresh combat system that lets you control the fights automatically or manually. Of course, it’s also packed with many side missions and mini-games.

The latter include casino games like roulette, which replicate the setting of the traditional online casino roulette, with a simple gameplay featuring a spinning wheel and a ball. In the roulette mini game, you can discover high stakes bets, as you estimate what slot of the wheel the ball will fall on. Many players claim that they improved their roulette strategy and skills while using these mini-games, which speaks of the depth of this release.

Returnal (2021)

For the fans of roguelike video games with tons of shooting and fighting, we have Returnal. This product of Sony Interactive Entertainment, developed by Housemarque, was one of the main selling points of the newly-released PlayStation 5.

Players are put in the boots of Selene Vassos, an ASTRA Corporation explorer focused on deciphering the mystery of an alien planet. There she discovers a time loop that keeps sending her back to her starting point every time she dies.

This is an excellent third-person shooter with many horror elements. It has received multiple awards, like the Best Action Game at the Game Awards and the Best Game at the 18th British Academy Games Awards.

We should also mention that this is one of the best games of the 2020s regarding sound effects and music. Finally, even though 2021 is in the past, Returnal is still one of the best PlayStation 5 games related to using the haptic feedback in the PS controller.

Diablo IV (2023)

Can you believe that it took 15 years for the guys from Blizzard Entertainment to launch the fourth installment of the Diablo series? At least the long wait paid off. This is something that many players can agree with. The same goes for the critics, many of which have listed Diablo IV as the best title in the series.

So, checking out Diablo IV is a must if you are a fan of action role-playing video games. The good news is that it’s available on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. Before the game begins, pick one of the five character classes and create your character.

This time, the world is significantly more extensive and includes five regions. Of course, that’s not the only reason thousands of players spend countless hours in this game. For instance, the cartoonish visuals are replaced with more immersive graphics that create a unique atmosphere.

Furthermore, the combat is even more exciting, and the progress is balanced because you get enemies that match your current level. Additionally, you can expect excellent side quests and an opportunity to meet people as you explore the map.
