Games Continue to Cross Over to Other Multimedia

Games Continue to Cross Over to Other Multimedia

There has always been a connection between gaming and television, but there seems to be a clear switch in regards to the medium, which originated first. Thirty years ago, it was mostly movies and series like Star Wars and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that crossed over to the world of gaming, but nowadays, it is the games that inspire movie and series producers to create television adaptations of games such as Resident Evil, The Last of Us, or even the Witcher. This new trend is only in its early stages and it is certain that there will be a lot more game-to-movie or game-to-series features in the near future.

Movie-to-game crossovers have gone a long way since the release of the first-ever crossover (Atari’s Superman in 1978). The involvement of major multimedia conglomerates such as Disney and Warner Brothers in the world of gaming has led to the release of multiple movie or series-based video games. There are games based on characters from the Marvel Universe, on characters from the DC Universe, and on characters from the Harry Potter Universe. In a way, it feels like every movie can spawn a video game or vice versa.

Can All Games Spawn Television Crossovers?

It is not possible for every game to turn into a movie or into a series, but at the end of the day, this is not really necessary. Some games are fine just the way they are and they do not really need to spawn a series, in order for them to be considered successful. Casino games are a pretty good example of such games, even if some of them have been inspired by movies or by other media, such as Jurassic Park slot or Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. A slot game like 3 Tiny Gods, does not really need to lead to a television crossover, despite the fact that it would have been fun to see its characters in an animated series that would be based on Ancient Egypt.

The Crossover Everyone Is Talking About

HBO invested a lot of money in the development of The Last of Us and their time and money were more than just well-spent. The first season of the series has been met with very positive reviews and its viewer averages have been as high as those of Game of Thrones. Seeing this success, it does not come as a surprise that HBO is already thinking of creating a spinoff. Just a few weeks after the release of the last episode of the season and before the beginning of the shooting for the second season, the studio is already discussing the possibility of investing in an origin story. This story will probably have nothing to do with Joel and Ellie but it will definitely include characters who are the main protagonists on their journey.

Will the Main Series End After Season 2?

If you are one of those who played The Last of Us and you know how Part 2 has ended, then you are probably wondering if the series will end after season 2. Considering that the second season is scheduled for release towards the end of 2024, it is a little hard to know how HBO’s executives are planning to monetise the golden ticket which is called The Last of Us. Most probably, the studio will try to break down the second part of the series into several parts so that it can stretch the story as much as possible. Some minor modifications have already been confirmed but it is certain that there will be a number of ground-breaking changes, in order to allow for the prolonging of the story. The only problem is that when a studio tries to stretch a story, it can often lead to too many changes, which occasionally have nothing to do with the original story.
