In 1990, Chris Columbus directed the American Christmas comedy film Home Alone, which was written and produced by John Hughes. The movie stars Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard, and Catherine O’Hara. Culkin portrays Kevin McCallister, a young boy who defends his suburban Chicago home from burglars after his family accidentally leaves him behind during their Christmas vacation to Paris. Home Alone was originally intended to be financed and distributed by Warner Bros., but production was shut down due to exceeding the budget. 20th Century Fox took over following secret meetings with Hughes.
Filming occurred between February and May 1990 in various locations across Illinois. The film premiered in Chicago on November 10, 1990, and was released in the United States on November 16 of the same year. Although initially receiving mixed reviews, Home Alone has since been positively received for its cast, humor, and music. It grossed $476.7 million worldwide and made Culkin a child star while becoming the highest-grossing live-action comedy until The Hangover Part II (2011) surpassed it. Additionally, it was the second-highest-grossing film of 1990 after Ghost and received nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy as well as Best Actor.
