Pre-production is more than just writing a script and reserving some time at Pinewood Studios. Especially when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You also have to do something called pre-visualization, which means that you employ artists to translate comic book heroes into live action heroes. Sometimes that’s done to preserve the comic book look of the hero like The Hulk and others it’s to find a way to pay homage to a look that wouldn’t translate all that well, like Scarlet Witch’s danskin look. Some characters don’t have a real world counterpart, like Ego the Living Planet, and others have one but they’re very different, like Rocket Raccoon. Some characters will go through some changes coping with issues like Thor and have redesigns that have to be drawn out first in concept art. Some have to have their comic book looks given a more believable grounding. It’s alright to have Falcon’s wings result in flight in the comics, but a more power suit oriented set of wings might work better in live action. There’s also practical considerations, like when to use practical effects like the first Thanos, or computer effects like the final Thanos. When a character like Captain America spans almost an entire century they also can go through some changes that have to be drawn out. But not all this art makes it to the final product. But after the movie’s release artist like Charlie Wen, Ryan Meinerding, Aleksi Briclot, and Andy Park will release images of their earlier drawings that give us a look at what could have been on the big screen.
