Upcoming Comic Book TV Shows in 2019:
1. Gotham Season 5 – January 3
Comic book fans are in for a treat in 2019, especially the fans of DC Comics, considering the number of new titles and renewed seasons coming out. Beginning our list with Gotham, what has been a great run for the prequel story of the Dark Knight, not belonging to any connected universe, it has entered its final season. And boy, the final trailer of season 5 looks absolutely crazy with the number of villains showing up and all the mayhem going down in Gotham City. Also, the fifth season is going to depict the final transformation of Bruce Wayne into Batman. The first episode drops on January third.
2. Deadly Class – January 16
The Russo Brothers have taken a break from working on superheroes after Avengers: Endgame but they aren’t going away from comic book adaptations. Deadly Class is a coming of age story based on a graphic novel by the same name, where a homeless teenager enrolls into a secret academy for the deadly arts called Kings Dominion. From then on, it’s his struggle trying to fit in among the misfits of deadly characters who also want to change the world for better using their skills. It arrives on January 16.
3. Doom Patrol – February 15
Doom Patrol is the second TV show coming from the streaming platform DC Universe, after Titans. For now, we only have a short teaser showing the entire roster of the superpowered outcasts. All of them have had some or the other life endangering experience but were ultimately saved, thanks to some experimental treatment. Although the other characters are straight from the comics, the addition of Cyborg was a surprise to everyone. However, his origin completely fits the description of the Doom Patrol. The show releases in DC Universe on February 15.
4. The Umbrella Academy – February 15
After several infants are simultaneously born to women who showed no signs of pregnancy a day before, seven of them are adopted by billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves. While he forms the Umbrella Academy to save the world, this team of super-powered beings, part ways. However, after Hargreeves passes away, all of them come together to solve the mystery of their father’s death. Oh and there’s the imminent threat of an apocalypse as well. The Umbrella Academy premieres on Netflix on February 15.
5. Cloak and Dagger Season 2
While the first season of Cloak and Dagger was all about Tandy and Tyrone discovering their superpowers and learning about their
destiny, the second season gets more serious. Announced at San Diego Comic Con, season 2 is going to arrive in the spring of 2019 on Amazon Prime. The announcement video teased the arrival of Mayhem as the villain and nothing else is known yet.
6. Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Season 6 – July
The last few episodes of Agents of SHIELD had been running in parallel with the events of Infinity War. Although we were expecting some of the characters turning into dust after the inevitable snap, it wasn’t carried in the show. Whatever the reason might have been, it won’t really matter since the sixth season is going to arrive in July, after Avengers: Endgame, when everything will probably go back to normal.
Not much is known about the upcoming TV show on Watchmen, the limited series comic book created by Alan Moore and Dave
Gibbons. Being developed by HBO, all we know is that Ozymandias is going to be present but he’s going to be older. It’s going to be a
completely new story written by Damon Lindelof who is also the executive producer of the project. With high respect for the source
material, Damon has assured fans that he won’t be messing with the original story. Apart from a few teaser images, nothing much is
known about the release date or the plot of the new series.
8. The Boys
Based on the comic book by the same name, The Boys revolves around a group of vigilantes who are ready to bring down corrupt
superheroes by any means necessary as they don’t mind fighting dirty. It’s set to arrive on Amazon Prime some time early in 2019.
9. Harley Quinn – October
Teased at the New York Comic Con, the animated Harley Quinn series will explore her journey of trying to find herself a spot in the
Legion of the Doom – one of the most evil villain groups in DC comics. The teaser featured Harley and Poison Ivy held in Arkham and there was a lot of fourth wall breaking. It releases in October in DC Universe.
10. Swamp Thing – May
As already mentioned that DC fans are in for a fun ride through 2019 with new content, we’re also getting a Swamp Thing live-action TV show. Although this isn’t the first time the character has been explored in this medium, it has been long time overdue. With James Wan as the executive producer and the kind of work he did with Aquaman, we are already looking forward to it, set to arrive in May in the DC Universe service.
