The Horus Heresy is a science fantasy series set in the fictitious Warhammer 40,000 universe created by Games Workshop, a tabletop miniatures gaming corporation. The Horus Heresy is a fictional galaxy-spanning civil war that occurs 10,000 years before the far future of Warhammer 40,000, and the series is written by multiple authors. The battle is described as a significant contributor to the game’s gloomy setting.

The books are produced by the Black Library, a part of Games Workshop, in a variety of formats, with the first title being released in April 2006; as of November 2019, the series has 56 published volumes, with more on the way..

The series has grown into a separate and lucrative product line for the Black Library, with volumes frequently appearing on bestseller lists and critical acclaim despite doubts. It is a well-established and definitive part of Games Workshop’s Horus Heresy sub-brand, as well as authoritative source material for the entire Warhammer 40,000 shared universe and its ongoing evolution.

Warhammer (previously Warhammer Fantasy Battle or just Warhammer Fantasy) is a mediaeval fantasy tabletop miniature wargame. Bryan Ansell, Richard Halliwell, and Rick Priestley devised the game, which was published by Games Workshop.

Players utilise miniature models (minis) to represent warriors, as they do in other miniature wargames. The playing field is a miniature battleground with buildings, trees, hills, and other landscape elements. In order to simulate a fight, players take turns moving their model warriors across the playing surface. Fighting amongst the models is decided by a combination of dice rolls and simple math. The game features fantasy aspects like as wizards, dragons, and magical spells, despite the fact that it is primarily centred on mediaeval warfare.

The first commercial miniature wargame to employ proprietary models was Warhammer. Miniature wargames rulesets used to be developed around generic models that could be purchased from any manufacturer.

The first edition handbook for Warhammer was published in 1983, and the series has been supported by model releases, extra rulebooks, and new editions of the core rules for the past thirty years. On July 10, 2010, the eighth and final edition of the core rules was released. Games Workshop no longer supports the game, and the latest extra rulebook was published in 2015.  Later that year, it was replaced by Warhammer Age of Sigmar, which employs the Warhammer models in a new setting and game mechanics.
