Disney Studios Animated short film – Paperman Plot

During the 1940s in New York City, a young accountant by the name of George is clutching a folder when he gets struck by a flying piece of paper as he stands on an elevated train station. Meg, a young woman, is the one pursuing the paper after she misplaced it due to a strong blast of wind caused by an approaching train.

The same thing happens to George when a subsequent gust of wind from another approaching train blows one of the papers out of George’s folder and blows it into Meg’s face, leaving a lipstick-smudged kiss imprinted on the paper, much to George’s amusement when George retrieves it. Meg is not amused by this at all. Because he is so captivated by the lipstick mark and by Meg’s beauty, he fails to notice that she has already boarded the departing train. As she walks away, the two share glances with one another.

George feels dejected when he gets to work and can’t stop looking at the paper that’s been marked with his lipstick on his desk. When he glances out the window, he is taken aback to see Meg in the building across the street, where she is working in an office that has a window that is open. After failing to get her attention by waving his arms, much to the annoyance of his boss, George begins folding paper aeroplanes from the stack of papers on his desk and throwing them out the window one at a time in an effort to get her to notice him. This causes his boss to become increasingly frustrated.

Sadly, his efforts are met with different degrees of failure, as well as disapproving looks from their manager. After exhausting all of the paper on his desk without success, he tries his luck with the paper that has been marked with lipstick. However, this attempt is futile as well because a gust of wind rips the paper from his grasp.

After that, Meg walks out of the office, and George, refusing to listen to his superior, bolts from his seat. He was in such a hurry that he couldn’t look both ways before he crossed the street, so all he ended up finding was the last paper aeroplane with a lipstick mark on it. He hurls it with all of his anger, and it soars up into the clouds.

It turns out that several of the paper aeroplanes had gathered in a nearby alley, and when the paper aeroplane marked with lipstick lands among them, they begin to stir and fly from the ground, giving the impression that they have come to life, and they begin to chase after George. To his utter bewilderment, a swarm of paper aircraft pushes him to head in the direction of a local train station and to board a train there.

In the meantime, the paper aeroplane with the lipstick mark takes off in search of Meg and eventually locates her at a flower stall. She recognises the lipstick mark on the paper, so she pursues the aeroplane to a different train station and hops on a separate train to follow it.

They are at last brought together when both of their trains come to a stop at the same station; George is still covered in paper aircraft, and Meg is carrying his paper aeroplane that has his lipstick mark on it. They are seen giggling and having a good time with one another at a restaurant table with the paper that has been marked with lipstick in between them as the credits roll. Even after the picture vanishes, the paper is still visible in the credits just before it takes flight.
