Michael Jackson’s Thriller short film was the third in a series created for songs from the iconic Thriller album, which remains the highest-selling album of all time with over 105 million copies sold worldwide as of June 1, 2016. In December 2015, it made history by becoming the first album to achieve triple diamond status (30 million sales) in the United States alone, according to the RIAA. The Thriller single topped charts in four countries in 1984, including reaching No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart and also charting in Spain, France, and Belgium. With its peak at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, Thriller made history by being the first album to have seven Top 10 singles. The RIAA certified Thriller as Gold and Platinum on December 4, 1989.

The innovative short films created for songs from the Thriller album – starting with Billie Jean, followed by Beat It, and culminating with the epic nearly-14-minute Thriller – pushed boundaries and elevated music videos into an art form. Michael Jackson expressed his vision for these films in his memoir Moonwalk from 1988: “I wanted something that would glue you to the set, something you’d want to watch over and over again… I wanted to be a pioneer in this relatively new medium and make the best short music movies we could make.” In a memorable scene from Thriller, Michael’s moonlit date with his girlfriend (played by model Ola Ray) is interrupted when he transforms into a werewolf. As they leave a movie theater together after their date, Michael playfully serenades her with verses from Thriller.
